OR YEHUDA, Israel, Dec. 18, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The study, which includes eleven sites in the US and Israel, is enrolling patients undergoing colorectal resection surgery to validate the safety and accuracy of Exero's xBar system for early detection of major, life-threatening complications such as an anastomotic leaks. The outcome of the study will support Exero's FDA De Novo submission. The xBar system consists of electrode sensors embedded in a standard surgical drain and placed near the anastomosis site. The electrodes are connected to a small electronic device outside the patient's body that records and relays data. The data is analyzed to indicate the risk of anastomotic leaks based on the status of tissue healing or damage. The study commenced in March 2024, and the one hundredth patient was enrolled at Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, by Dr. Brad Olberding, MD, General Surgeon. Dr. Michael Jobst, Bryan Medical Center's Principal Investigator, explains, "The xBar sensor is placed through the standard procedure for surgical drains, and does not alter our routine surgical and post operative workflow. If proven successful, the data provided by xBar can support us with earlier detection of post operative complications. This could allow surgeons to intervene before the patient's condition becomes dire and help minimize prolonged hospital stays." Dr. Erez Shor, Exero Medical's CEO, said, "This milestone marks significant progress toward the completion of xBar's pivotal trial, and brings us one step closer to making this technology available to circumvent life threatening complications, helping both patients and surgeons." (Nine) It was buried in a landfill by Newport County authorities in Wales, and Howells wants access to the site to get it back. In a hearing to determine if Howells could proceed to sue the council, the judge was told by the council's barrister James Goudie that Howells had offered to donate 10 per cent of the Bitcoin to the community in what amounted to a bribe, the BBC said. He said the council was under no obligation to excavate and that too much time had elapsed for Howells' claim to the hard drive to have merit. NEW YORK (AP) — The virtual president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump , threatened on Monday to impose new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China as soon as he takes office, as part of his plans to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico , and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, as one of his first decrees. PUBLICIDAD If implemented, tariffs could drastically increase prices of everything in the United States, from gasoline and cars to agricultural products. The United States is the world's largest importer of goods, with Mexico, China, and Canada being its top three suppliers, according to the most recent data from the US Census. PUBLICIDAD Trump made the threats in a series of posts on his Truth Social social media platform, where he complained about the arrival of unauthorized migrants, even though border crossings at the southern border have remained close to their lowest level in the past four years. "On January 20th, as one of my many first decrees, I will sign all the necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on all products entering the United States, and their ridiculous open borders," he wrote, complaining that "thousands of people are crossing through Mexico and Canada, bringing crime and drugs to levels never seen before," even though violent crime has decreased since the peaks recorded during the pandemic." He said that the new tariffs would remain in effect "until we stop this invasion of drugs, particularly fentanyl, and all illegal foreigners entering our country." "Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily resolve this problem that has been simmering for a long time. Through this means, we demand that they use this power," he added, "and until they do, it is time for them to pay a very high price." Trump also lashed out against China, stating that he has "had many conversations with China about the huge amounts of drugs, particularly fentanyl, being sent to the United States, but with no results." "Until they stop, we will be charging China an additional tariff of 10%, on top of any additional tariffs, on all of their many products entering the United States of America," he wrote. The Chinese embassy in Washington warned on Monday that there will be losers everywhere if there is a trade war. "The economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States is mutually beneficial by nature," stated embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu on the social network X. "No one will win a trade war or a tariff war." He added that China has taken measures in the past year to help stop drug trafficking. It is not clear whether Trump will actually carry out the threats or if he is using them as a negotiating tactic before taking office in the new year. Trump's nominee for Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent —who, if confirmed, would be one of several officials responsible for imposing tariffs on other countries—has stated on several occasions that tariffs are a negotiating tool. He wrote in an opinion article on Fox News last week, before his nomination, that tariffs are "a useful tool for achieving the president's foreign policy objectives. Whether to get allies to spend more on their own defense, open foreign markets to U.S. exports, ensure cooperation in ending illegal immigration and intercepting fentanyl trafficking, or deter military aggression, tariffs can play a central role." Trump won the election largely due to voters' frustration with inflation, but the tariffs he threatens to impose could further increase prices of food, cars, and other goods. If inflationary pressures rise, the Federal Reserve may need to keep its benchmark interest rates high. Trump's threats are known as arrests for illegally crossing the southern border have been decreasing. The figures for October show that detentions remain near their lowest level in four years. The Border Patrol reported 56,530 arrests in October, less than a third of last year's October total. Meanwhile, arrests for illegally crossing the border from Canada have been increasing over the past two years. The Border Patrol made 23,721 arrests between October 2023 and September 2024, compared to 10,021 in the previous 12 months. More than 14,000 of those arrested at the Canadian border were Indians, over 10 times the number from two years ago. Last week, a jury found two men guilty on charges related to human trafficking for their role in an international operation that led to the death of an Indian migrant family who froze while attempting to cross the border between Canada and the United States during a snowstorm in 2022. Much of the fentanyl in the United States is smuggled from Mexico. Border seizures of the drug significantly increased during Joe Biden's presidency, with US officials tallying approximately 12,247 kilograms (21,900 pounds) of seized fentanyl in the fiscal year 2024, compared to 1,154 kilograms (2,545 pounds) in 2019 when Trump was president. If Trump were to go ahead with the threat of tariffs, the new taxes would pose a huge challenge for the economies of Canada and Mexico, in particular. The Canadian dollar weakened in the foreign exchange markets immediately after Trump's publication. During Trump's first term, his decision to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and reports that he was considering a 25% tariff on the Canadian automotive sector were seen as an existential threat in Canada. Canada is one of the most trade-dependent countries in the world, and 75% of Canada's exports, including automobiles, go to the United States. Tariffs would also cast doubt on the reliability of the 2020 trade agreement negotiated largely by Trump, the USMCA, which replaced NAFTA and is scheduled for review in 2026. It is not clear how Trump would legally apply tariff increases to these two key trading partners of the United States, but the 2020 agreement allows for national security exceptions. Officials from the Trump transition team did not respond to questions at the moment about what authority would be used, what they would need to see to prevent the tariffs from being implemented, and how they would affect prices in the United States. When Trump imposed higher tariffs during his first term, other countries responded with their own tariffs. Canada, for example, announced billions of dollars in new tariffs in 2018 in response to U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Many of the American products were chosen for their political impact rather than economic. For example, Canada only imports $3 million worth of yogurt from the United States annually, and most of it comes from a plant in Wisconsin, the home state of the then Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, a Republican. That product was taxed with a 10% tariff. The Canadian government, in a joint statement by Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Minister of Public Safety Dominic Leblanc, emphasized the close relationship between both countries and stated that they will discuss the border and extensive economic ties with the incoming administration. "Canada gives top priority to border security and the integrity of our shared border. Our relationship today is balanced and mutually beneficial, especially for American workers," reads the statement. Freeland, who chairs a special cabinet committee on Canada-US relations to address concerns about another Trump presidency, has said that the president-elect's promise to launch a massive deportation operation and the possibility that this could lead to an influx of migrants to Canada is one of the main points to be analyzed by the committee. A senior Canadian official had said before Trump's publications that Canadian officials expect Trump to issue decrees on trade and the border as soon as he takes office. The official was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The Mexican Secretariats of Foreign Affairs and Economy have not yet commented on Trump's statements. Normally, such important matters are addressed by the president during her morning press conferences. Last week, a senior Chinese trade official said that higher tariffs on Chinese exports would be counterproductive by raising prices for American consumers. The Vice Minister of Commerce, Wang Shouwen, also stated that China can handle the impact of such “external shocks.”In a world increasingly dominated by visual content, Google has unveiled a groundbreaking AI tool that pushes the boundaries of image generation. Dubbed “Whisk,” this experimental offering from Google Labs allows users to create images using other images as prompts, marking a significant departure from traditional text-based AI image generators. Launched in December 2024, Whisk is currently available to users in the U.S. and is powered by Imagen 3, Google’s advanced image-generation model. This innovative approach promises to make AI image generation more intuitive and accessible, particularly for those who struggle to articulate their visual ideas in words. Why is this a big deal? Imagine trying to describe your dream house to an artist. You might spend hours detailing the intricate architectural features, the specific shade of blue for the front door, and the landscaping you envision. With Whisk , you can simply show a few reference images – perhaps a Victorian facade, a Mediterranean garden, and a specific shade of blue from a favorite painting – and let the AI generate an image that captures the essence of your vision. This visual approach not only streamlines the creative process but also opens up new possibilities for those who find it challenging to translate their visual ideas into words. How does Whisk work? Whisk’s interface is surprisingly simple. Users start by uploading an image that serves as the base prompt. They can then refine their vision by adding more images, each contributing different elements or styles to the final output. For instance, you could upload a picture of a cat and then add images of a lion, a crown, and a majestic landscape. Whisk would then generate an image of a regal cat, perhaps with a lion-like mane, perched on a throne in a grand setting. While still in its experimental phase, Whisk has already garnered significant attention for its unique approach and impressive capabilities. It’s been praised for its ability to capture the “essence” of an image, allowing for rapid visual exploration and brainstorming. However, Google emphasizes that Whisk is not intended for pixel-perfect edits or precise recreations . Instead, it’s designed to facilitate creative exploration and generate new ideas based on visual inspiration. My experience with Whisk As someone who constantly seeks new ways to express creativity, I was eager to experiment with Whisk. I started with a simple image of a sunflower and then added pictures of a cityscape, a starry night sky, and a Van Gogh painting. The result was a mesmerizing image of a sunflower with swirling, vibrant petals, set against a backdrop of a cityscape merging into a starry night sky. The AI had beautifully captured the essence of each input image, creating something entirely new and unexpected. I also experimented with using Whisk to generate ideas for a logo design. I uploaded images of different geometric shapes, color palettes, and fonts. The AI generated a variety of interesting concepts, some of which I wouldn’t have thought of on my own. While I didn’t end up using any of the generated images directly, they served as valuable inspiration for my final design. What are the implications of Whisk? Whisk represents a significant step forward in AI image generation. By shifting the focus from text to images, it opens up new avenues for creative exploration and makes AI more accessible to a wider audience. This technology has the potential to revolutionize various fields, including: What are the limitations of Whisk? While Whisk is undoubtedly an impressive tool, it’s important to acknowledge its limitations. As an experimental technology, it’s still under development and may produce unexpected or unpredictable results. Additionally, Whisk’s reliance on visual prompts can sometimes lead to misinterpretations or inaccurate representations. For instance, if you upload an image of a dog and then add a picture of a bird, the AI might generate an image of a dog with wings, which may not be what you intended. The future of AI image generation Whisk provides a glimpse into the future of AI image generation, where visual prompts will likely play an increasingly important role. As AI models become more sophisticated and capable of understanding complex visual relationships , we can expect even more innovative and powerful image generation tools to emerge. These tools will not only empower us to create stunning visuals but also transform the way we interact with and perceive the world around us. Medical misdiagnosis is a sinister truth, but many people don’t know how to address it. It can be life-threatening unless multiple opinions are sought. However, the recent revelation that Tishaa Kumar (20), the daughter of film producer Krishan Kumar and Tanya Singh, passed away due to a misdiagnosis was shocking. Tishaa died in July 2024. It was earlier reported that Tishaa died after battling cancer. Months after her death, her mother Tanya Singh shared a long note on social media, clarifying that Tishaa did not have cancer but died of “misdiagnosis”. The revelation has come as a shocker to many, who perhaps can relate to it. How does one ensure they are not misdiagnosed? “Medicine is a vast subject. There are specialities, superspecialities and sub-superspecialities. Despite studying all this for 10–15 years and having practiced for decades, it is not always possible to know everything in your chosen field of medical practice. Medicine is a continuously evolving science. New knowledge and developments keep happening continuously. Many of these may be proven wrong afterwards,” says Dr K. Sudhir Reddy, Consultant Orthopedic, Joint replacement & Arthroscopic Surgeon, Landmark Hospitals. Health misdiagnosis occurs when a medical condition is incorrectly identified or missed entirely, says Dr. Srikrishna R. Boddu, MBBS, MD (General Medicine), Consultant General Physician, Kamineni Hospital. “This can lead to inappropriate treatments, delayed care and severe consequences for patients. Commonly misdiagnosed conditions include cancer, vascular events (like strokes and heart attacks) and infections,” says Dr. Srikrishna. “Sometimes the symptoms, findings, and test results are so atypical that it may be extremely difficult to reach a diagnosis. The body response of different patients for the same disease also varies significantly, just like different people react differently in the same situation. Overall, medicine is not like mathematics. Diagnosis and treatment are like a judgement taken after considering so many factors combined with that doctor’s level of experience, knowledge, skills, and beliefs. Despite best intentions, it is not always possible to give the correct diagnosis,” says Dr. K. Sudhir. Today, medical degrees can be bought irrespective of your qualifications or pre-graduation marks. “Same is followed even in specialty and superspeciality examinations. This implies that securing a medical seat at Rank 1 is equivalent to securing a seat at rank 10,000,000. Now, with the advent of social media and digital marketing, you can buy customers, reviews, diagnostics, and drugs. This is the core problem of healthcare. It’s high time we need stringent regulations on healthcare and education; otherwise, we are going to be prey for consumerism, puppets in the hands of capitalistic, ruthless investors,” says Dr Jagadeesh Kumar V, Senior Consultant Physician and Lifestyle Specialist, Kims Hospitals. Dr Jagadeesh explains that in developed countries, all patients must be seen by an internal medicine specialist, as he is an expert in all systems. Only his referrals to other specialists receive consideration. Misdiagnosis can happen due to various factors such as atypical presentation of symptoms, lack of thorough patient history, and cognitive biases in clinical decision-making. Continuity: Keep continuity with one doctor who, by continuity of care, can understand your disease and your body better. Frequently changing specialists may lead to broken care and partial understanding of disease and may lead to misdiagnosis. Second Opinion: For critical decisions in healthcare, it is worth taking a second or third opinion. Most doctors may be reassured if you take a second opinion. If the same conclusion is supported by another doctor, it gives more confidence in the diagnosis and treatment for both the doctor and the patient. If the second opinion is different from the first, then it may lead to finding the correct diagnosis and rectifying any mistakes. Choose Wisely: Choose a doctor who can spend time on the case and patient, keep updating themselves with the latest scientific developments, etc. Treatment & Results: If with treatment the symptoms are not improving or the disease is not progressing as initially explained, you must go over the diagnosis all over again, including a second or third opinion. At the age of 15 and 1/2, Tishaa received a vaccine that may have triggered an autoimmune condition, leading to an incorrect diagnosis. if your child is experiencing “lymph node swellings,” pls take immediate action. make sure to get a second and third opinion before going in for a “bone marrow” test or a biopsy. lymph nodes can also swell due to emotional trauma. — Kishen Kumar’s wife TanyaFACT FOCUS: Vermont ruling does not say schools can vaccinate children without parental consentSabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan have broken up after a year of dating, according to People . “They are both young and career-focused, so they’ve decided to take a break,” a source told the publication on Tuesday (Dec. 3) The pair first sparked dating rumors in late 2023, a few months before making their public debut at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty in March. 32-year-old Keoghan also starred opposite 25-year-old Carpenter in the music video for her Billboard Hot 100 -topping single “Please Please Please,” which is featured on her album Short n’ Sweet . Roy Keane is modern football's foremost naysayer. From refusing to celebrate against your former team to sharing hugs in the tunnel with your club's arch-nemesis, the retired Irish midfield enforcer struggles to get his head around the diluted version of the sport where he once poured his heart out and shed blood with every match. Now a pundit, he has frequently expressed his disdain for the contemporary model of the beautiful game. However, in an interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap YouTube channel back in 2021 , the 53-year-old admitted to participating in a "gentrified" tradition himself, revealing the one player he asked to swap shirts with. When he wasn’t hurling himself into poleaxing challenges, Keane was often caught exchanging fiery words with opponents or commanding his Manchester United and Ireland teammates with the authority of a sergeant. Discovering that he once set aside his trademark intensity for a more congenial gesture comes as a surprise, although he admits to having regretted it afterward. Ipswich fan involved in heated clash with Keane has spoken out, revealing what sparked the confrontation after United’s 1-1 draw at Portman Road. Keane Reveals One Player He Asked to Swap Shirts In a 2021 episode of The Overlap , Keane recounted representing Ireland in a friendly against Germany ahead of the 1994 World Cup. The former Republic of Ireland star shared that after his team’s victory, he approached ex-Germany international Matthias Sammer to swap shirts. However, Keane faced an unexpected snub as the former Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart player declined his request - a moment the Sky Sports pundit later came to regret. “I’ve asked one player to swap a jersey, which I regret, when I played Germany with Ireland,” he told Neville (see minute 46:00 in the video below). “Once to swap a player for Germany, the pre-94 World Cup. We played Germany in a friendly. And after the game — we had beaten them, to be fair — I was being polite. What’s the sweeper, Sammer? He said, ‘No’ and I went, ‘f***k.’ Anyway, but that was it and I just thought I shouldn’t be asking.” Keane admitted that, while Sammer was "polite" in rejecting his shirt swap request, the United legend also revealed that Sammer wouldn't have been his first choice. As a big admirer of Zinedine Zidane , he even named the former Real Madrid manager his toughest opponent. Having faced Zidane both at club and international level, Keane recalled a missed opportunity to swap shirts after a Madrid match. He explained, “Honestly, he [Sammer] was polite — not that I wanted his jersey — but if I really wanted to swap with somebody, it probably would have been Zidane or somebody." “But after that, I just went, it’s just stupid swapping jerseys really. And Zidane, I remember we played him when we were at United and obviously Zidane was a brilliant player. After the Madrid game, we were walking up the tunnel together, and sometimes you walk up to the player, and I was looking at him, and he was looking at me, thinking he’d probably ask me [for my shirt]. But no, we didn’t. I’m glad [we didn’t swap shirts], and that was the other time I thought, ‘Will I, won’t I?’ and I’ve gone, ‘No, leave it.’”(Bloomberg) — Peru’s Congress on Tuesday fired the energy and mines minister over a bill the government had introduced to increase oversight on informal miners that had prompted nationwide protests. A majority of lawmakers voted to fire Romulo Mucho, who is a close ally of the global mining industry — but had irked the nation’s growing informal mining sector with a proposal to introduce new regulations. Hundreds of thousands of Peruvians work in informal mines, mainly extracting gold, under the umbrella of a mechanism known as Reinfo. Critics say Reinfo has become a cover for illicit economies. While Reinfo is scheduled to come to an end at the end of the year, some lawmakers are proposing to extend it. But Mucho had introduced a bill on behalf of the government ending it and proposing increased regulations instead. The motion approved by Congress said Mucho “lacked interest and suitability to solve the problem of small-scale and artisanal miners in Peru.” The congressional vote underscores the growing political clout of informal mining in Peru, which moves billions of dollars according to authorities but is also a key source of employment. Peru’s mining chamber SNMPE, which groups multinational mining corporations, vigorously opposes extending Reinfo and had backed Mucho. President Dina Boluarte, who is among the world’s most unpopular leaders, will now have to name a new minister. A key question is whether she will pick someone who will double down on regulating informal mines or someone who will support extending Reinfo. Boluarte’s administration has been marked by deferring to congress when opposed. The bill was introduced last week, prompting protests from informal miners throughout the country. On Tuesday, as many as eight highways were blocked by miners protesting the bill, including important ones like the Pan-American Highway and the so-called mining corridor that is used by several large copper mines like MMG Ltd’s Las Bambas.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell says it was a really easy decision to sign with the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and the presence of three-time MVP Shohei Ohtani played a part, too. Snell was introduced Tuesday at Dodger Stadium accompanied by his agent Scott Boras. The left-hander finalized a $182 million, five-year contract last Saturday. “It was really easy just cause me and Haeley wanted to live here, it’s something we’ve been talking about for a while,” Snell said, referring to his girlfriend. “Then you look at the team. You look at what they’ve built, what they’re doing. It’s just something you want to be a part of.” Last month, Snell opted out of his deal with San Francisco to become a free agent for the second consecutive offseason after he was slowed by injuries during his lone year with the San Francisco Giants. Snell gets a $52 million signing bonus, payable on Jan. 25, and annual salaries of $26 million, of which $13.2 million each year will be deferred. Because Snell is a Washington state resident, the signing bonus will not be subject to California income tax. “It just played out the way that people around me felt comfortable with, I felt comfortable with, they felt comfortable with,” Snell said. “We talked and found something that could work for both of us. You want your worth, you want your respect, and you want enough time to where you can really make a name for yourself. I’ve made a name for myself outside of LA, but I’m going to be invested.” Two-way star Ohtani, who signed a record $700 million, 10-year deal a year ago, had a historic first season with the Dodgers. He helped them win the franchise’s eighth World Series while playing only as designated hitter and became MVP in the National League for the first time after twice winning the award while in the American League. “It helps with him in the lineup for sure. That’s big motivation,” Snell said. “You want to be around players like that when you’re trying to be one of the best in the game. Yeah, it played a big part.” Snell joins Ohtani and fellow Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto atop Los Angeles’ rotation. All-Star Tyler Glasnow will be back after having his first season in LA derailed by a sprained elbow. Ohtani didn’t pitch this year while recovering from right elbow surgery but is expected back on the mound in 2025. The rest of the rotation includes Tony Gonsolin, Landon Knack, Dustin May, Bobby Miller and Emmet Sheehan. “I pitched on six-man, five-man, four-man rotations,” Snell said. “I’m good with it all as long as we have a plan, we’ll execute it.” Snell, who turns 32 on Wednesday, went 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 20 starts this year, throwing a no-hitter at Cincinnati on Aug. 2 for one of only 16 individual shutouts in the major leagues this season. He struck out 145 and walked 44 in 104 innings. He was sidelined between April 19 and May 22 by a strained left adductor and between June 2 and July 9 by a strained left groin. Snell won Cy Young Awards in 2018 with Tampa Bay and 2023 with San Diego. He is 76-58 with a 3.19 ERA in nine seasons with the Rays (2016-20), Padres (2021-23) and Giants. He has known Andrew Friedman, Dodgers president of baseball operations, since he was 18. In the aftermath of winning the World Series and discussing how the Dodgers could repeat next year, Friedman said, “All conversations kept coming back to Blake.” Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. “Usually in major league free agency, you’re buying the backside of a guy’s career, the accomplishments that they have had,” he said. “With Blake, one thing that’s really exciting for us is, as much success as he’s had, we feel like there’s more in there.” Snell was 2-2 against the Dodgers in his career. “We couldn’t beat him, so we’re going to have him join us,” Friedman said. .___ AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB Advertisement AdvertisementTop 7 must-read EV stories of 2024 — Interesting EngineeringCerity Partners LLC decreased its holdings in shares of Comerica Incorporated ( NYSE:CMA – Free Report ) by 58.3% during the third quarter, according to its most recent filing with the SEC.
